Day 3: Los Angeles - Borrego Springs

(Driving day 1: 168 miles)

This morning we’ll collect our bikes, and head out of the urban sprawl of Los Angeles and ride the spectacular US74 to Lake Elsinore and onwards into the stunning Santa Rosa Mountains. Our overnight stay in Borrego Springs lies deep in the heart of the Californian high mountain deserts where an oasis of swimming pools, cool beers, good food and desert breezes await us.

.

4

Day 4: Borrego Springs - Ajo

(Driving day 2: 297  miles)

This morning we ride towards the Salton Sea which lies at 71 metres below sea level and directly on the San Andreas Fault line. Heading south we then enter the Californian playground known as the Algodones Recreation area and through the spectacular Imperial Sand Dunes. With scenery like this, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in the Sahara Desert! Tonight we stay in a charming little historic town, once famous for it’s copper mines.

5

Day 5: Ajo - Tombstone

(Driving day 3: 214 miles)

We’ve all seen the huge Saguaro Cacti in the famous Spaghetti Westerns set in and around Arizona. Well, today we ride through the Sonoran Desert and see them for ourselves. Our route takes us through the wide open spaces of southern Arizona and through towns and villages that are heavily influenced by the architecture of nearby Mexico. We skirt the sprawling city of Tucson and then head off towards the High Plains for our overnight in ‘The Town that’s too tough to die’ – Tombstone, Arizona. While away the evening roaming the boardwalks, taking a drink in Big Nose Kate’s Saloon, or grab a great steak at The Longhorn Saloon or one of the many other authentic restaurants.

6

Day 6: Tombstone

(Fun and Explorer day)

A free day to explore the many attractions of Tombstone: explore Boothill Graveyard; visit the OK Corral and watch the entertaining and informative re-enactment of the famous gunfight; investigate the many and varied shops or simply hang out in one of the town’s many cowboy saloons.

7

Day 7: Tombstone - El Paso

(Driving day 4: 218 miles)

Riding south from Tombstone we will pass through the thriving town of Bisbee, now home to many artisans and artists, and past what was once one of the biggest Copper mines in the USA. From Bisbee we head towards Douglas which lies on one of the major USA/Mexico border posts, though we will only give the Mexicans a wave before continuing our journey eastwards towards El Paso. This part of the journey takes us through some of the most deserted roads in southern USA via the famous Geronimo Surrender Monument at Apache, a truly inspiring days riding. Our evening gives us the opportunity to eat at a number of restaurants near our hotel on the outskirts of El Paso.

8

Day 8: El Paso - Alpine

(Driving day 5: 229 miles)

First stop will be at ‘The Largest Harley Davidson Dealers in the USA’ Barnett Harley Davidson in El Paso – huge and amazing! Our ride soon sees us cruising out of New Mexico and into the wide open spaces of Texas. We’ll take the quiet, twisty roads through the Davis Mountains for some fun riding, before wending our way down through Fort Davis to our overnight stay in the town of Alpine.

9

Day 9: Alpine - San Antonio

(Driving day 6: 362 miles)

The back roads of western Texas are virtually traffic free and the sheer scale of this vast State really starts to become apparent. Small towns dot the road on our journey south and the odd wrangler may well be seen going about his daily business. Lunch will be in the busy town of Del Rio and our afternoon moves us on east to the thriving city of San Antonio, Texas.

10

Day 10: San Antonio

(Fun and Explorer day)

Maybe visit the Alamo today and see some of the history and background of this once heavily disputed Texan city. Enjoy a stroll along the famous San Antonio River Walk with its many cafes, restaurants, shops and bars and spend the evening listening to live music.

11

Day 11: San Antonio - Galveston

(Driving day 7: 273 miles)

Time to head south east today for the shores of The Gulf of Mexico. Our route now begins to take us into the greener lands of Southern Texas and leaves the desert lands of the West behind us. The coastal route into Galveston is spectacular with huge holiday homes built on stilts and a sea road that sometimes appears to be lower than the ocean that is passing by to your right! Galveston is a busy coastal town with many bars and restaurants to help us chill out for the evening.

12

Day 12: Galveston - Henderson

(Driving day 8: 263 miles)

The first stop of the day will be to board the ferry from Galveston to Port Bolivar across the mouth of Galveston Bay. Keep a lookout for the many dolphins and pelicans that live in and around this busy waterway. The heavily forested route of our preferred road for the afternoon takes us through small towns and villages and the outskirts of Lafayette before we reach our unique overnight stay perched right on the Bayou at Henderson, Louisiana. Son of a gun, we’ll have some fun tonight!

13

Day 13: Henderson - New Orléans

(Driving day 9: 167 miles)

Today is all about the old sugar plantations of the Deep South. We’ll ride through corridors of sugar cane, and through the little historic town of Franklyn, with its pretty, tree-lined avenues. Take time out to visit one of the beautiful old antebellum plantation houses which have been lovingly restored, and see how life was for the pampered rich. Then on to our 2-night stay in New Orleans – The Big Easy – and let the carnival begin!

14

Day 14: New Orléans

(Fun and Explorer day)

Our hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of the French Quarter, within easy walking distance of Bourbon Street, Frenchmen Street and the bustling French Market, where every kind of live Jazz, Blues, R & B, Country, Zydeco and many others abound! Go on a steamboat cruise down the Mississippi, take a tour of New Orleans which includes seeing places devastated by Katrina or just indulge yourself in the multitude of sights, sounds, smells, places and people that this thriving city has to show you!

15

Day 15: New Orléans - Mobile

(Driving day 10: 170 miles)

Prepare to be amazed as we leave New Orleans via the amazing 23 mile long Lake Pontchartrain causeway – ‘The road with no end’ and prepare to indulge yourself in a traditional Louisiana breakfast in the town of Mandeville. Tennessee makes its way into our story book today as we head east towards Alabama along the coast and through the seaside resort of Biloxi. Don’t forget to look to your left as well on this ride at the houses of the rich and famous. Our downtown hotel in Mobile offers an easy stroll to many downtown bars and restaurants with music and entertainment for those who aren’t partied out after New Orleans!

16

Day 16: Mobile - Tallahassee

(Driving day 11: 269 miles)

Keep your ears peeled today for the distant strains of banjos playing, and your senses tuned for the drifting perfume of illicit moonshine stills! Heavily wooded highway with sleepy towns and villages interspersed with the most amazing series of southern churches will have you reminiscing over a drink or two for years to come. Our hotel on the outskirts of Tallahassee is well situated for an easy evening stroll to many nearby restaurants and bars.

17

Day 17: Tallahassee - Daytona Beach

(Driving day 12: 252 miles)

We’ve arrived in the “Sunshine State”, and our journey takes us predominantly eastward through this busy State and towards our third and final Ocean, the Atlantic.
Here, we can dip our toes in the sea and sign off our Coast to Coast USA odyssey. Daytona Beach is our destination and this evening, gather with friends to enjoy a cool beer on the terrace bar of our art deco hotel while savoring the magnificent views over the Atlantic ocean.

18

Day 18: Daytona Beach - Orlando

(Driving day 13: 76 miles)

A short ride today via Daytona Raceway, and perhaps take an optional speedway tour. Nearly 3,000 miles across mainland USA and a lifetime of memories to live and re-live, an adventure of truly epic proportions! Spend the evening on International Drive and maybe join us for a farewell night of food, drink, and entertainment. We’ll be there – are you coming?
