Baja California Mexico & Whale Watching

Welcome to an amazing adventure tour exploring Baja California and the Mexican peninsula. On this 9-day tour, we ride on the famous Mexican Hwy 1 along the spectacular coastline, rugged mountains, desert, and giant cactuses. We will visit many beautiful small villages and experience the local way of life. The roads are twisty, the ride fun and enjoyable, while traffic is slow.

On these winter tours, we include whale watching in San Ignacio. Of the three locations in Baja California where the gray whales make an appearance each year, Laguna San Ignacio is regarded as the best: It’s been said the whales here are friendlier and encounter more likely. It’s not guaranteed that you get to pet a gray whale, but the odds are pretty good here.

San Diego – Ensenada, Baja Mexico

(Driving day 1: 145 miles)

This is the day we start our Baja Mexico California adventure!
When everyone is ready on their bikes, we start our ride on the 1.300 miles long Baja Mexico tour. Beautiful San Diego disappears behind us as we head south for a unique adventure full of history and fun. We spend the day driving on fantastic motorcycle roads; Historic Route 94 and 98, plus Old Hwy 80. As we pass through the gorgeous twisty section up the Otay Mountain Wilderness, the roads are curvy and the scenery spectacular. During most of the day, we will drive along the Mexico border, which is well guarded by the U.S. Border Patrol. Enjoy + have your camera ready!

When we enter Mexico, you can definitely feel the change of pace as soon as you cross the border and life just gets a bit more relaxed. Our next stretch will take us to Valle De Guadalupe, Mexico’s finest wine country. Vineyards and olive groves everywhere will make you feel like you are somewhere in Southern Europe until we reach again the shores of the Pacific Ocean for our last stretch of the day; a breathtaking ride into Bahia de Todos Santos and Ensenada where we’ll overnight. Ensenada has plenty of great food options and some characteristic Cantina’s where you’ll get a true sense of the culture of this city.

Day 3: Ensenada – Cataviña, Baja California

(Driving day 1: 230 miles)

Today we head south on Mexico’s Hwy 1 riding through Santo Tomas, where the first grapes were planted centuries ago. Civilization quickly leaves space to the full wilderness. Located in the middle of the Desierto Central de Baja California, Catavina is a combination of gigantic granite boulders, unique vegetation and white sand. Hundreds of species of cacti and desert plants, many of which are endemic – like the boojum – seem almost artfully arranged between the boulders along dry river beds. The final few miles into Catavina are breathtaking and we’ll get there just in time for Sunset.

4

Day 4: Cataviña – San Ignacio, Baja California

(Driving day 3: 242 miles)

The ride leaving Catavina is memorable as we cross the heart of the Valley of the Cirios Cacti. Eventually, we’ll ride into Guerrero Negra just after crossing the state line from Baja Norte to Baja Sur. Fish tacos are a must-have while in Baja, and in Guerrero Negro you’ll have the best!

Shortly after the landscape will change. Volcanic tops and cactus-covered hills are surrounding the charming town of San Ignacio, an authentic desert oasis also famous for its 300 years old Mission.

Day 5: San Ignacio, Baja California

(Explorer & Fun day – Whale watching)

There are three spots in Baja California Sur where the gray whales come every winter – Laguna San Ignacio, Laguna Ojo de Liebre, and Bahía Magdalena. Visitors go out into the lagoons in small fishing boats, and up-close encounters with the gentle giants are extremely common. There’s nothing quite like getting to kiss a baby gray whale in the wild from a panga. Prime season for gray whale watching is late January through early April.

Of the three locations in Baja California where the gray whales make an appearance each year, Laguna San Ignacio is regarded as the best: It’s where the whales are friendlier and encounters more likely. It’s never guaranteed that travelers will get to pet a gray whale, but the odds are pretty good here.

Day 6: San Ignacio – Bahia de Los Angeles, Baja California

(Driving day 4: 213 miles)

After a memorable whale watching experience in San Ignacio, we start heading back to Baja Norte, heading towards the beauty of the Sea of Cortez and its bays.

More spectacular landscape will be our backdrop all the way to Bahia de Los Angeles. Bay of LA is popular for activities such as kayaking, windsurfing, and tourism in addition to being a sports fisherman’s paradise, famous for its fabulous fishing.

7

Day 7: Bahia de Los Angeles – San Felipe, Baja California

(Driving day 5: 208 miles)

After a memorable whale watching experience in San Ignacio, we start heading back to Baja Norte, heading towards the beauty of the Sea of Cortez and its bays.

Day 8: San Felipe – Tijuana, Baja California

(Driving day 6: 213 miles)

Today we wrap up our Baja adventure with another great ride across the Peninsula and all the way back to the Pacific Ocean. It’s such a great feeling to be able to ride from a sea to another within the same day!

We will be riding some twisty roads through the mountains and dropping back onto the Ojos Negros valley. Once we arrive in Ensenada, we will be taking MEX 1 north all the way to Tijuana. Tonight we’ll toast to a great Baja California motorcycle ride, sure to be wanting to plan our next one soon. We celebrate our good times together, new friendships at our last supper together (farewell dinner).

Day 9: Tijuana – San Diego, CA - Home travel

We check out of the hotel and drive back the short ride to San Diego, where you can grab a shuttle bus to the airport to return home. Thanks for a great ride, good times, and sincerely thank you for choosing to travel with Explorify. We will be happy to see you again as a participant in one of our other tours in the US, South America, Asia, Oceania, or Europe.
