Cowboys and Canyons

This circular route from Las Vegas through Nevada, Utah and Arizona includes some of the most spectacular scenery, experiences, and riding that the Wild West has to offer! Yeeehaaaw cowboys – let’s ride!

10 days/9 nights, approximately 1,200 miles
2020 tour dates: 23 August to 1 September

Day 1 Arrive in Las Vegas

Settle in to our themed hotel, right on the city’s famous Strip. This evening, we’ll all get together for a welcome meal, & celebrate the start of the adventure! Afterwards, take in the fantastic sights of Las Vegas – from the beautiful dancing waters of the Bellagio, to the calm canals complete with singing Gondoliers at the Venetian. Check it all out, maybe have a little flutter, lose your jetlag & acclimatise to the heat.

Day 2 Free day Las Vegas

This morning, you’re free to do as you please until we meet up later to collect our trusty mounts, which we’ll be riding across deserts, through canyons, & over mountains in the coming days. While you are in Las Vegas why not consider treating yourself to one of our exciting Helicopter Tours! And you have another evening to enjoy the hustle & bustle of Las Vegas, & prepare for an early start in the morning.

Day 3 Las Vegas to Zion Canyon

Saddle up & move ‘em out for an early ride along The Strip as we leave the city (& the traffic) behind, & head through the Valley of Fire State Park, for our first taste of the dramatic scenery that will become a hallmark of this tour. We’ll stop for brunch in a one-horse town, then onward, following the winding course of the Virgin River to our overnight at Zion Canyon. Stable your steel mount for the evening, & take the free shuttle bus to explore the canyon, or maybe enjoy a refreshing swim in the pool, against the dramatic backdrop of majestic peaks. 189 miles

Day 4 Zion Canyon to Bryce Canyon

Zion is one of the west’s most stunning National Parks, & the ride through it is one of our absolute favourites. Experience the dramatic scenery, closeness to nature, & wonderful colours of the rocky canyon as we climb the winding switchbacks to the cool green plateau above. We continue on towards Bryce Canyon, to marvel at the fascinating hoodoos & rock formations, & later we’ll have the chance to have dinner at a Cowboy Cookout, or watch real cowboys in action at the rodeo!    81 miles

Day 5 Bryce Canyon to Monument Valley

Pull on those cowboy boots for today’s scenic ride on the ‘Million Dollar Road’ & the ridge of The Hogback, with steep drop-offs on both sides enabling spectacular views of the Grand Staircase-Escalante area. A ride through Capitol Reef National Park with its twisting canyons, massive domes, and sandstone spires will have you reaching for your camera yet again, but save some room for more photos as we descend the switchbacks & ride on through the Valley of the Gods. The approach to Monument Valley is awe-inspiring, & the stunning view from your hotel balcony over the sacred lands of the Navajo people is one of the most iconic in all of America’s Wild West.   309 miles

Day 6 Monument Valley to the Grand Canyon

Sunrise over Monument Valley is not to be missed, to see the awe-inspiring formations of buttes & mesas, familiar through many films & TV adverts. We’ll cross into Arizona, & ride through the Painted Desert for a traditional Navajo lunch. Then ride on to the Grand Canyon for our overnight stay, arriving in plenty of time to take a scenic helicopter flight, or just relax  & enjoy the colourful sunset over the biggest (& most beautiful) hole in the ground you ever did see!   188 miles

Day 7 Grand Canyon to Jerome

Look out for wildlife as we leave the Grand Canyon area this morning, & head down to Flagstaff on Route 66. Picking up the scenic road through Oak Creek Canyon, we carry on to Sedona, with the beautiful backdrop of  massive red rock formations. If you’ve ever wanted to shoot a Winchester rifle or a Colt revolver like the old cowboys, you can do this and more under expert guidance at a local fully equipped indoor gun range, before we head out to our historic hotel in the ghost town of Jerome.  Be sure to stop by the saloon this evening, to meet some of the local colourful characters!  135 miles

Day 8 Jerome to Kingman

Leaving Jerome, we ride 127 curves in just 12 miles on scenic Highway 89.  By lunchtime, you can get your kicks in the heart of Route 66 at Seligman, & later call in at Mother Road Harley-Davidson, just in case you still haven’t picked up your souvenir T-shirts! We overnight in Kingman, right on the Mother Road itself.     180 miles

Day 9 Kingman to Las Vegas

Staying on Route 66, we take the twisty Sitgreaves Pass, & descend to the quaint old gold mining town of Oatman, with its wooden boardwalks, hitching rails & wild donkeys.  Then we cross the spectacular Hoover Dam into Nevada, & mosey on back to Las Vegas. Time to return our trusty steeds & hang up our cowboy hats, & later maybe meet up for a farewell meal, & swap stories of our adventures & rides on the trails!  161 miles
